The one thing more important than what you do in retirement

A reader confessed to me last week that he’s worried in retirement he’ll wonder, What’s the point of it all?

That’s because his work and career gives him a North Star. It drives him to live up to his responsibilities and obligations, so he gets the job done and never lets others down. And that’ll disappear in retirement, along with his Why.

And if he loses his Why, he’ll lose his hope. For instance, I read the other day that the opposite of happiness is not unhappiness. Rather, the opposite is hopelessness, because without hope, we’ve only got indifference and resignation.

Which is a bit doom and gloom, right? But still important.

Important because maintaining your Why in retirement can be tricky, especially if the only perspective you get told about retirement is to be financially secure, and relaxed and comfortable.

Your Why needs, most likely anyway, to be a little more than just either of those two things.
