Why being part of the 32% isn't all bad

Australian Bureau of Statistics data reveals that 177,500 Australians aged 45 years and over who had previously retired returned to work or planned to in 2016/17, the latest stats available.

Nearly half (42%) did so for money, while one is three (32%) stated they were “bored and needed something to do.” That’s 56,800 people unretiring in one year, or considering it, because they’re bored and need something to do.

It’s natural to then feel inadequate or like a failure. But truth is, the act of retiring is becoming less a “line in the sand” deal for many people (where one day they retire, never to work again) and more iterative (where they may retire three, four, or even five times before it sticks).

After all, retiring is a big change.

And big change takes time (and perhaps multiple attempts) to perfect.

So if you join those 32% unretiring because you’re bored and need something to do, don’t abuse yourself with feelings of inadequacy and failure.
